There’s something incredibly special about seeing your animation come to life alongside the work of dozens of other talented artists, 60 in fact. A few months ago, I had the amazing opportunity to be part of a massive motion design collaboration: a full, animated music video for Miki Matsubara’s City Pop 1979 classic, “Stay With Me.”
The project brought together animators from all over the world, each tackling a small segment of the song. Now that the final video is out, I wanted to give a little peek behind the curtain at my process for creating my piece.
Moodboard
So the first port of call is the moodboard and get the sweet, sweet imagery goodness to give me some inspiration.
Building the illustrations
I knew what I wanted to do from a quick sketch (lost it somehow). From there, I had a bit of a play and also some illustrations using some of the references I collected. I’m no illustrator. However, this definitely put my illustration skills to the test, so I took parts from the moodboard elements to help build the illustrations of what I had in mind. Some elements, like the city, I used from a previous project for speed take.
Storyboard
Once I got all the images created, I put the storyboard together, creating the love story between two characters, from two frames from the bustling Tokyo city to a quiet romantic Japanese beach.
Finished segment
